UNICEF Article 24

Health and Health services - Every child has the right to the best possible health.

At Nursery our children have access to drinking water and fruit at snack time. Children and parents have regular opportunities to learn about healthy foods and lifestyles through cooking, gardening, outdoor Nursery, forest school, weaning and oral health activities.

This page is about keeping you and your family well and active. There will be links to helpful agencies and tips on staying healthy.

Illness

  • If your child is unwell and cannot come to school please let us know by phoning us on 0121 675 3421
  • If your child has been vomiting or has diarrhoea, please keep them at home from school for 2 days (48 hours) after the illness stops.
  • If your child starts a course of antibiotics they must remain at home for the first day (24 hours).
  • If your child has a food allergy or food intolerance please inform us immediately.
  • Please check that your child has all the immunisation recommended for young children. This could protect other children as well as your own from certain diseases.

Absences - Illness and Medication

Please let us know if your child is ill (tel: 0121 675 3421) - staff will contact you on the first day of any absence if you have not made contact with us. If your child is absent for more than two days and there is still no contact we will carry out a home visit.

Medicines are not given in school unless under special circumstances. If your child requires a short course of treatment please speak to a member of staff. If your child requires medication on a regular basis (e.g. for asthma) please see Miss Iqbal or Mrs Begum and we will make suitable arrangements.  We will only administer prescribed medication.
To prevent the spread of infection, the Environmental Health Department has advised us that all children must have two clear days away from school after any bout of sickness or diarrhoea.  Please keep your child at home if they are not well enough to participate fully in the Nursery day, this includes going outside to play.

Health checks

Health checks are very important. They are an opportunity to check your child is developing. They are usually carried out by your health visitor either at your home, GP surgery, baby clinic or children's centre. These development checks are also a good opportunity for you to raise any concerns you might have. Your child's very first health check takes place shortly after they're born, and continue until they are 2 to 2 1⁄2 years old.

The safest way to protect your child is to ensure your child is up to date with immunisations.

Mental Health

A clear distinction is often made between 'mind' and 'body'. But when considering mental health and physical health, the two should not be thought of as separate.

Poor physical health can lead to an increased risk of developing mental health problems. Similarly, poor mental health can negatively impact on physical health, leading to an increased risk of some conditions.

Here are a list of organisations which will support families with their mental health

Mind

They will provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. We campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.

Young Minds

Mindful Families

Mindfulness is a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment. Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.
